Italian Pizzelles: One family’s tradition

Pizelles

Today is the first of a mini series on sharing Christmas cookie traditions. Trina, from the Dairy Council of California is sharing a tradition she and her boys have, cooking Pizzelles. Aren’t they adorable? These would be great for a Cookie Exchange. Paging through colorful cookie cookbooks is a December ritual that motivates my boys for the holiday baking season. We do not bake often, so this is a very special treat in our house. After paging through the recipes and photos one always rises to the top. It’s not in the photo-heavy cookbook—in fact, it’s not in any cookbook. [...]

Browned Butter Snowballs with Dried Cranberries & Pecans

Browned Butter Snowballs with Dried Cranberries and Pecans

I started my Christmas cookie baking the other night.  Sadly, I had a bit of a mishap and lost a tray of them to the floor, right out of the oven. My dog was happy! These cookies are the bomb if I do say so.  I was inspired by one of my fellow Betty Crocker bloggers, Sugar, from Cooking With Sugar‘s, Browned Butter Pecan Balls. We have a family recipe that was similar so I thought I would try our recipe with browned butter and added the dried [...]

Top Ten Recipes of 2010: Year In Review

Maybe it’s just me but did 2010 blow right by?  What a year it has been.  Looking back over what I cooked this year I decided to compile a top ten in honor of that time of year.  Every news show I turn on and every paper I read has list after list so here is Adventures In The Kitchen Top Ten Recipes of 2010.  Drumroll please… Red Pepper Soup with a Puff Pastry crust makes me long for another trip to Napa and to Bistro Jeanty for their amazing soup! The Cantaloupe, Red Onion & Walnut Salad is such [...]

Chocolate Peppermint Shortbread Cookies

Today I am sharing a new favorite Christmas Cookie.  One of the cookies in our family recipe rotation is a shortbread cookie topped with chocolate and nuts.  Feeling inspired I tried a new version with crushed peppermints and drizzled with white chocolate.  It was dangerously good. It might even be what I make for the Cookie Exchange I am going to this Monday. It is easy to make and can be packaged up as gifts for your friends or co-workers.  I used this cute food packaging that the Michael’s by my house features  by Martha Stewart.  They always have coupons [...]

Give the Gift of Food: Red Velvet Cake Pops

We are kicking off December with a festive Red Velvet Cake Pop.  They make great favors or gifts and what better time of year than the holidays to take along a gift of food.  A few weeks ago I met up with three new online friends from one of the groups I have joined.  We were asked to  bring an example of our blog or the products we produce.  I decided to make Red Velvet Cake Pops and bring them as favors. Cake pops became all the rage thanks to Bakerella a few years back.  I sort of missed that [...]

Coconut Cupcakes and a Christmas Dessert Buffet

Dallas Design Agency I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving.  I spent it with my family.  That evening we went with my niece and nephew to see Tangled, continuing our Thanksgiving night movie tradition.  What a cute movie. This weekend I worked on a Christmas Dessert Buffet to showcase a variety of baked good and treats.  Dessert buffets have become quite the trend. It is a fun way to add a sparkle to your parties.  First, pick a theme and a color scheme.  I chose a red and white theme and created desserts that would go with that theme. I [...]

Espresso Shortbread

Looking for new cookie recipes I discovered these Espresso Chocolate Shortbread cookies over at Smitten Kitchen.  How can you go wrong with espresso and chocolate and shortbread.  I was sold at the recipe but then I took a bite. They melt in your mouth. These are from Dorie Greenspan’s “Baking From My Home to Yours”.  It is a great cookbook full of amazing treats.  These cookies are buttery with a hint of coffee and sweet, but not too sweet, and chocolate.  Deb was right when she said they get better with age.  I had these in a tin for over a [...]

Bacon Wrapped Dates and Pecorino Crackers

[donotprint] Today I give you foodie crack.  I am warning you these are terribly addictive.  You need to make extra because you will eat a few before they make the serving plate. Last weekend I brought these to my good friend Carol’s annual Christmas party.  One partygoer ate more than half of them.  He commented on how additive they were asked what was inside.  I thought I would die laughing when I said they were dates, he said oh, I hate dates.  The empty plate told a different story. Just remember I warned you. As an extra I am including [...]

Cranberry, Caramel and Almond Tart

Cranberry Caramel Tart

This is one of my new favorite tarts.  I made this for Thanksgiving and feel in love with it, as did my family. It is a perfect holiday dessert. The mixture of creamy, buttery caramel, the tartness of the cranberries and the crunch of the almonds is wonderful.  The tart is pretty studded with the red of the cranberries. I used the pastry dough from Nancy SIlverton but I confess I continue to  struggle with my tart dough.  I still have lots to learn in that arena. I do not [...]

Sweet Corn Pudding

corn pudding

One of my favorite sides is the corn pudding dish.  Usually I go right for Ina Garten’s but thought I’d try something new this year.  I saw this one from Alton and was intrigued. Don’t forget to enter the Cookbook Giveaway by entering a comment on your favorite side dish here. I used the Parmesan cheese but think I would substitute cheddar next time.  I would also add a cup of fresh corn.
