Hazelnut Popovers and a Thanksgiving Giveaway

hazelnut popovers

I have a Thanksgiving giveaway to celebrate Thanksgiving week here at Adventures in the Kitchen.  I received a copy of Diane Morgan’s new cookbook The New Thanksgiving Table by Chronicle Books. I loved it so much I asked the kind people at Chronicle if they would share a copy with one lucky reader and they said yes.  Just leave a comment sharing your favorite side dish.  If you twitter you get a second entry by leaving another comment,  If you subscribe you get a third. I tried the Spinach Salad with Bosc Pears, Cranberries, Red Onion, and Toasted Hazelnuts and [...]

Currant Oat Scones

When I lived in Los Angeles one of my favorite Saturday morning activities included breakfast at Campanile.  I loved going over to the La Brea Bakery and taking home some of the baked goods created by Nancy Silverton.  She is one of my favorite chefs.  I would be  poor and my waist line would grow if I lived close to her  restaurants in LA, Pizzeria Mozza and Osteria Mozza. This week I discovered they are creating a Mozza Cookbook.  Break out the champagne! I am dreaming of all the wonderful recipes that will be in there.  Hoping that my favorite [...]

Peaches and Blackberry Coffee Cake

I decided to try making a coffee cake from the Bisquick Healthy Heart.  Can I tell you a secret?   I grew up with a mom who used Bisquick.  That was the base at our house for both biscuits and pancakes.  My favorite hands down was the coffee cake. I confess that it is still on hand for those quick cooking needs. I have been enjoying all the bounty of fresh fruit and decided to incorporate peaches and blackberries into a coffee cake.  I decided to try it using Bisquick. In all honesty the first one did not turn out, the [...]

Panini Open Faced Insalate

Many of you have commented on new ideas for Grilled Cheese. That was and still is my favorite sandwich.  There is nothing like a great grilled cheese.  Nancy Silverton, now of Mozza, used to have a Grilled Cheese night at Campanile.  The place would be packed with diners waiting to try the weekly specials.  She would be behind the bar, whipping out her takes on grilled cheese. Kathy, over at Panini Happy, recently had a Grilled Cheese Pageant.  There are many ideas for updating the classic grilled cheese. A twist on the grilled cheese is the Panini Open Faced Insalate.  [...]

Kids Cooking Giveaway

For the last of four Adventures in the Kitchen giveaways I thought we would give out a Kids Cooking Kit.  I started cooking and exploring in the kitchen when I was little.  Cooking is a great creative outlet for children.  Involving them in the process opens up new foods for them. One night when I was about 10 or 11 years old, my parents were out celebrating their anniversary and my little brother and I were with a babysitter.  I decided to make a cake from scratch.  I believe I left out an important ingredient such as baking powder or [...]

Buttermilk Cranberry Scones and a Winner

Thank you all for participating in my Cookbook GIveaway.  The winner is Maggie, go by and congratulate her on her win! I have had to postpone the final giveaway until next Monday, so check back then for the Kids Cooking Giveaway! Today I bring you Buttermilk Cranberry Scones.  I discovered these one evening when I was in need of a recipe for a birthday celebration for my friend Liz, the next morning.  Pinch My Salt had this recipe on her site.  These are moist and full of flavor.  The lemon is a great pairing with cranberries. It was a lovely [...]

Popovers

Growing up it was a family tradition on Saturday to go to Bullocks for lunch.  It was quite the generational outing that included my mom, grandmother, great grandmothers and aunts.  The event was usually for a birthday or special celebration. We would get there early and shop for a while.  Then we would go into their lunch room.  In addition to the lunch there would be a fashion show. The favorite part of the meal were the popovers.  Each person received a piping hot popover at the start of the meal.  They would place the popover onto the plate and [...]

Banana Nut Bread

I have been cooking up a storm and am excited to share the new recipes with you.  This weekend I made Banana Nut Bread.  Three bananas were starting to ripen and calling out to be made.  I looked at my cookbooks and saw Pastries from La Brea Bakery. The recipe was from created by one of my favorite chefs, Nancy Silverton.  The creator of La Brea Bakery but most importantly part owner of two fabulous restaurants here in LA, Pizzeria Mozza and Osteria Mozza. They are two of the hottest restaurants in LA and I can assure you they are [...]

Spiced Yogurt Muffins

So I obviously did not meet my goal of posting every day, must less in days!  But here is a little light breakfast treat for the holiday season.  I saw these in the November issue of Food and Wine and thought I would try them.  I had fresh cranberries in my refrigerator so I decided to add them to the mix.  They made these extra moist and tangy.

Meyer Lemon Cranberry Scones

Everywhere I went yesterday the stores were already decorated for Christmas.  How crazy is that? I want to enjoy fall and Thanksgiving before crossing into the Christmas season.  Except for Christmas music.  I had a roommate in my twenties and in October we would close all the windows and blare our favorite Christmas music. Seriously though, I know the stores are hurting in this tough economy but I wish we could have that small space between Halloween and Christmas to enjoy the fall. Knowing I am fighting an uphill battle I gave in and bought cranberries to try out some [...]
