BlogHerFood 09 & Cherry, White Chocolate and Pecan Blondies

This weekend I had the pleasure of attending BlogHerFood09 in San Francisco.  I had the opportunity to meet all of the foodbloggers who had inspired me to start my blog.  Heidi Swanson of 101Cookbooks and Matt of Matt Bites led a great workshop on photography.  My take away – read my camera manual!  One of my favorites was hearing Ree from The Pioneer Women talk on one of the panels.  She was so sweet and seemed like she was quite down to earth.  I introduced my boss to her site and she has become addicted.  We have to go to [...]

Currant Oat Scones

When I lived in Los Angeles one of my favorite Saturday morning activities included breakfast at Campanile.  I loved going over to the La Brea Bakery and taking home some of the baked goods created by Nancy Silverton.  She is one of my favorite chefs.  I would be  poor and my waist line would grow if I lived close to her  restaurants in LA, Pizzeria Mozza and Osteria Mozza. This week I discovered they are creating a Mozza Cookbook.  Break out the champagne! I am dreaming of all the wonderful recipes that will be in there.  Hoping that my favorite [...]

Szechwan Hoisin Honey Chicken

Here is another quick chicken dish that can be whipped up after dinner.  I made this a few weeks ago but have taken awhile to post it.  This is from the Wok Fast book by Hugh Carpenter and Teri Sandison.  It has a menu of sauces that you can mix and match to create your own dish. Any long time reader here at Adventures in the Kitchen can see that I love peppers but you can substitute other vegetables such as green beans or asparagus. Szechwan Hoisin Honey Chicken by Hugh Carpenter and Teri Sandison 1/4 cup chicken broth 1/4 [...]

Chocolate Cherry Bites

At work much of our donor marketing is done through volunteer work.  We are starting to plan our big fundraiser and have many items to produce.  The night before I was to meet with them, I decided to whip up a batch of cookies and tried this Chocolate Cherry Bite recipe from one of my new favorite cookbooks, The Pastry Queen. As you go through the cookbook each recipe calls out your name, well mine at least. I would love to have this little restaurant in my neighborhood.  These cookies are rich but the nuts given them a bit of [...]

Hatch Chile Potato Casserole

Last night my friend threw an impromptu barbeque and I knew immediately what I would bring.  The day before I saw this Hatch Chile Potato Casserole over at the Homesick Texan.  Her grandmother had passed away and this is a dish similar to what they bring to funerals.  I didn’t mention that part to my friends at dinner. But it is a sweet tribute to her grandmother, along with some fun photos from her childhood.  Food is such a great backdrop for family and relationships. I still had more hatch chiles and have been looking for new ways to use [...]

Summer Succotash

Yesterday was International Bacon Day.  Who knew and who creates these days?  A few weeks ago I tried Summer Succotash, a recipe I saw in More magazine several years ago.  It combined peas and corn, which are personal favorites with the addition of crispy bacon. I loved how easy this was to put together.  The bacon gives a smoky flavor to fresh vegetables. Summer Succotash Serves 6 to 8 4 slices applewood smoked bacon, diced 1 sweet onion, diced 2 cups corn kernel 2 teaspoons minced garlic 2 cups fresh or frozen sweet peas, blanched 3-4 sprigs of thyme Salt [...]

Peach Berry Cobbler with Sugared Almonds

Labor Day weekend starts tomorrow.  Seriously, where did our summer go?  What are your plans for the weekend? I am fitting in one last visit to Disneyland with my niece and nephews before school starts. Get together with friends, celebration my sister in laws birthday and see the local premiere of a friends movie.  I plan to savor the long last weekend of summer. When I saw this cobbler in Cooking Light I earmarked it for future use. This week I decided to catch up and make some of those recipes before summer ends.  It is a nice combination of [...]

Corn with Roasted Chiles, Creme Fraiche & Cotija Cheese

I have a refrigerator full of food bought before the heat came upon us here in the OC.  One item was a few roasted Hatch chilies.  I first hear about from my Adopt a Blogger Adrienne at Hungry Bruno.  A few days later I saw them in Bristol Farms.  Curious, I bought a few.  The chile comes from Hatch, New Mexico and is the center of an annual Labor Day Weekend Chile Festival. Last night I had to give in and roast them.  Not thinking clearly, I peeled them without gloves.  Just not a good idea.  I paid for that [...]
