Kids Cooking Giveaway

51cihrAHrVL._SL500_AA280_

For the last of four Adventures in the Kitchen giveaways I thought we would give out a Kids Cooking Kit.  I started cooking and exploring in the kitchen when I was little.  Cooking is a great creative outlet for children.  Involving them in the process opens up new foods for them.

One night when I was about 10 or 11 years old, my parents were out celebrating their anniversary and my little brother and I were with a babysitter.  I decided to make a cake from scratch.  I believe I left out an important ingredient such as baking powder or baking soda (or added to much) and that cake was hard as a rock.  It was no treat but I am sure they praised my efforts!

Things don’t always go perfect in the kitchen, but it is about the journey, the time spent together baking or cooking dinner.

My niece and nephews love pigs in a blanket.  Once we made them with little eyes and a tail.  Pigs in a Blanket are easy to make.  The kids love to roll up the hot dogs in the dough.  You will see though that they got a bit more than golden brown.  They certainly didn’t notice.

So to enter this last giveaway share your favorite childhood recipe you’d like to see updated.  That is it.  The winner will be chosen through random.org. The contest ends Sunday, May 10, Mother’s Day.  IMG_2638.JPG

Pigs in a Blanket

1 pack of hot dogs-your preference
1 can of crescent rolls
Cheddar or American cheese slices, optional

Preheat oven to  375 degrees .

Unroll dough; separate at perforations.  Lay out dough on an ungreased cookie sheet.  Place a hot dog on the dough and start rolling up from the widest to the smallest point.   You can wrap the hot dog with the cheese before rolling in dough.

Bake 13 to 17 minutes or until dough is light golden brown and hot dogs are heated through.

My aunt started to teach me to cook when I was about 8. It’s a little odd that she was the one to teach me as she hated to cook or bake. My mother and other aunts loved it and were all very good at it. Maybe she was the one who had the time as she didn’t have any children. I still like to cook but I really like to bake and am always happy when someone comes to visit because I can try out some of the recipes I have collected.

My grandma started baking with me when I was really young. I love baking and hope my son does too (his wife will love it lol). I’d love to see the sugar cookie recipe updated… There’s so much butter in the recipe! When it cools down over here I hope to try it with the I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter sticks… Thanks for the opportunity!

I grew up in Ireland. My mum was a baker not a cook…every Saturday we made soda bread, brown bread, apple tart, oatmeal cookies, some sort of cake and pavlova for Sunday lunch. I loved pavlova…crispy on the outside, gooey on the insude, piled with cream and strawberries.
I have never made pavlova since I moved here – how hard can it be, but I am afraid of messing it up and getting gooey mess…any suggestions?

When I was a kid, one of my favorite things to eat and make with my mom was tuna fish casserole. I thought it was the most amazing thing. Now, I think that it is pretty bland and not very good. I really need to find me an updated version that will help me remember my childhood favorite but taste good to me now.

I am not a very great cook so the things I made as a child is still in my recipe book until now. I love making French Toast for breakfast, but lately I have been bored to death. I know it’s a very simple and easy recipe but that’s what I hope for an update..

I always baked Nestle Toll House cookies with my mom. For some reason when I make them now they aren’t as exciting. My daughter and I love to make cupcakes but need a good recipe for icing.

I would like a French Toast recipe too.

My mother and father both taught me how to cook. From my mother, I learned the importance of following a recipe and measuring ingredients (essential skills when baking!) From my father, I learned to trust my instincts in choosing ingredients that I thought would “go” together, and the rebellious joy that comes from throwing those ingredients together with abandon! A recipe I would like to see updated? I have fond memories of making old fashioned cocoa fudge, but the recipe I used was far from foolproof! There was a vague “boil for about five minutes” that sometimes worked and sometimes didn’t. It would be nice to have a temperature or candy stage to use as a guideline!

I used to LOVE cooking in the kitchen with my mom. I especially loved when she’d let me help make doughnuts. We’d take biscuit dough and make a hole in them, then fry them, and roll them in sugar and cinnamon. I can’t wait to teach my little girl and to have fun cooking in the kitchen together. It would be fun to see some easy doughnut recipes…

I loved Mac and Cheese as a kid. I still make it for my daughter, but I’d love to find a way to make it more homemade, yet still quick (we use the blue blox now!).

When I was a little girl I loved to help my mom cook. One of my all time favorite things to help cook and eat was macaroni and cheese…usually homemade, but now that I have grown up tastes it is pretty bland! Thanks for the giveaway both my 3 and 1 year old love to try and help me in the kitchen, and if they had there own tools it would help out!

I have two boys and not much of a cook. Although my parents were both great cooks I was one of 8 kids so it was hard to teach us to cook. It’s been a journey to learn how to cook for my all american husband when I was brought with an italian father cooking italian food.

Anyhow, I’d love to start cooking more with my kids and give them a head start!

When in first grade we made a recipe book with all the kids favorite food- when browsing through my baby book we all still laugh because my favorite recipe was (and still is) broccoli casserole…

My favorite recipe as a child was when my grandmother let me help her make her old-fashioned apple stack cake. I love watching her and listening to her humming Amazing Grace as she cooked.

As a Minnesotan, we grew up on casseroles in my family. With (4) kids, my mom found them to be easy to make, economical, and time saving. They usually tasted pretty good, but I’m looking for one that has some “zing” to it….not your typical midwestern very mild version….. maybe even something a little “fancy”. (can casseroles be “fancy”?) Anyhow, with all the working parents out there, maybe a casserole recipe makeover would be a welcome addition to the family cookbook! I know my three kids (ages 9,7, and 3) would love to see mom come up with something new! Thanks!

Homemade Spaghetti… by the time I was 10 I had perfected my own spaghetti recipe that I (and my mom) use to this day. My mom and dad both worked full time while I was growing up so we were taught very young to work around the house. Being the only girl, I learned to cook quite young.

Since I stay at home, I haven’t taught my kids to cook and maybe I should. They sit on the bar and watch, but they don’t actually cook.

You can even find my recipe on my blog. LOL!

I started cooking for the family when I was in 7th grade. My mom worked nights so she would leave me instructions for easy things like grilled cheese and tomato soup, burgers and fries or she would prepare ziti and I would heat it up. I always loved to cook the popcorn on the stove, too. My son has a pretend kitchen I made him and would be all set with his own apron and accessories.
